SAMPLE TEST                                                September 14, 2023

Physics                                              Mr. Byrne

Show all work.  If necessary, attach a separate sheet of paper.  Remember to apply the rules governing significant figures and include appropriate units in your calculations.

Skip the first question. This type of question will not be on this test.

1)      Determine if the following equation is dimensionally consistent.  Show all work.

a = v2/d, where a is acceleration (m/s2), v is velocity (m/s) and d is displacement (measured in meters)

2)      Convert the following:

a)      17,500. miles/hour to meters/second

b)      2.70 g/cm3 to kg/m3

c)      66 inches to meters

d)      180.0 pounds (lb) to Newtons

e)      710 nanometers (nm) to millimeters (mm)

Conversion Factors: 1 mile = 1609 meters, 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 Newton = 0.225 lb

Metric prefixes: kilo = 1000, centi = 1/100 or 10-1, milli = 10-3, nano = 10-9

3)      Solve the following problems and express your answers in scientific notation:

a)      (4.0 x 10-3 m)(5.0 x 107m)

b)      (4.320 x 104  m)¸(6.70 ms)

c)      (8.633 x 104 m2) + (9.78 x 104m2)

d)      (825.4 kg) ¸ (13.5 kg)

4)      A student measures the mass and volume of five samples of the same mineral and records the data in the table below.

(a)    Prepare a graph of the data.

(b)   Calculate the slope of the graph.

(c)    What does the slope represent?

Answers:

I am giving the answers to these questions below.  I am not showing the work behind the answers.  If you need to go over how I got these answers, email me (I will do my best to get back to you) or see me in the morning for extra help.

1) Units on left side =  m/s2

units on right = m2/s2 / m.  The meter in the denominator cancels one of the meters in the numerator, leaving m/s2.  So the units on the left equal the units on the right.

2) a) 7821.5 m/s (5 significant figures)

    b) 2.70 x 103 kg/m3

    c) 1.7 m

    d) 800.0 N

    e) 7.1 x 10-4 mm

3) a) 2.0 x 105 m2

    b) 6.45 x 103 m/ms (meters per millisecond)

    c) 1.841 x 105 m2

    d) 61.1 (note there are no units in this answer)

4) b) Slope is approximately (depending on how you drew your line) 9.00 x 103 kg/m3

    c) Density

5) a) 4 sig figs

    b) 2

    c) 6

    d) 6
