In August 2003, Mr. Byrne completed his second summer in the Science Research Program for Science Teachers run by Columbia University. In July 2004, he traveled to Singapore and stayed at the Anglo-Chinese School - Independent as part of an exchange organized by the Columbia program. In July and August 2005, Mr. Byrne completed the SMART program at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn. For information on these programs, check out the following:

In August 2007, Mr. Byrne returned to Polytechnic for a two-week intensive program regarding introduction to engineering and use of probes and computers in high school laboratory activities. In July/August 2012, Mr. Byrne participated in the NASA-funded Suborbital Astronautics Workshop conducted by Teachers In Space at the Mojave Air and Space Port in the Mojave Desert in California.
